Liquidation Update:
Lounge Not Closing,
But Migrating To Sunnier Climes
As we reported earlier, SoHo megaboutique Lounge is closing its doors to make way for a massive Victoria's Secret flagship, but its windows are not an entirely accurate description of the store's fate.
Lounge's owner Jack Menashe tells DNR that the store will not actually be closing, just moving south... waaay south.
SoHo's loss, is South Florida's gain, as it were. Lounge will reopen in a shopping mall just North of Miami Beach.
In addition, while the posters in the windows pictured above imply that Lounge was forced out, it did not actually lose it lease, but voluntarily allowed VS to buy it out. “We had a very good real-estate opportunity and we decided to move on,”
Menashe tells DNR, “I thought the market was changing [in Soho], and I
didn’t want to change with the street necessarily. I wanted to take the
brand to the higher level.”
The Shophound is actually familiar with the Aventura Mall, where Lounge will eventually reappear in a 6,000 square foot space. We had a brief South Beach residency some years back, and we remember it as being upscale, but still your basic mall. It's certainly not Broadway in SoHo, which while ever more mall-like in so many ways, is still an urban setting. For Lounge, Florida may not be a bad move. While the store was unable to move on from the highly embellished denim looks of a few years ago, the South Florida market with its love of glitzy club and beach looks, may turn out to be a prefect fit for its aesthetic.
As for the faux Going Out Of Business "Sale" which is set to run through January, we haven't checked back, but we certainly hope that, at this point, the prices have been re-adjusted to reflect actual savings, rather than the fake inflated markdowns that actually brought supposed sale prices to around the merchandise's suggested retail prices.
