Unique Returns To NoHo! Is Canal Jeans Finally Finished?
July 12, 2006
Is Canal Jean Co. finally leaving Broadway? After Bloomingdale's took over its famous SoHo location, the downtown institution moved to a much smaller space in NoHo, but never really regained its former glory. Our 80's nostalgia radar picked up a sign in the window of the current store which says that Unique Clothing Warehouse would soon be opening at the location. Unique?! The wild Village emporium that filed bankrupcy and folded some 15 years ago? A call to the number on the sign brought us to Harvey Russack, the owner of Unique who informed us that Canal Jean Co., his brother's store, would be launching a licensing business to produce it's own branded products, and Unique would be reappearing in the space. "I've been waiting around for years to bring Unique back," he told The Shophound, and the change in Canal Jean's business offered the perfect opportunity revive the store in almost the same spot. Unique's return is still in the planning stages, and Canal may move to a smaller store, or simply be included in the new Unique's mix of brands. We will be watching closely for developments.
