Happy Coincidences: Discovering Sia at The Apple Store SoHo
January 9, 2008
The Shophound wasn't planning to visit The Apple Store on Prince Street this afternoon, but as we were walking by, our bladder suggested that it might be a good time to stop in. It wasn't the first time we had gone in there just to pee, and it won't be the last, but we congratulated ourselves on our timing because to our surprise and delight, Australian singer Sia was in the middle of a live performance to promote her new album, Some People Have Real Problems. The genial singer's pixieish appearance and demeanor belied a soulful singing voice. We were pleased to catch a beautiful performance of her best known song, and one of our favorites, "Breathe Me", which is well remembered for underscoring the ending montage in the final episode of "Six Feet Under".
"Fuck! We've never performed this without drums," she laughed before launching into her final number, "The Girl You Lost To Cocaine". Drums were deemed to loud for the store's small performance space. "It's an exclusive! If it's shit you can clap along," she told the audience who happily followed her instructions, even though it wasn't shit at all. In fact, it reminded us just why we still like that particular Apple Store above its newer, larger siblings. As we left, we wondered how much time we would allow ourselves to wait in line this Sunday when British singer KT Tunstall is scheduled to make an appearance. We'll get there early.
