Chelsea Market Gets Kosher: Friedman's Delicatessen

Friedmanschelsea
The Shophound has always been fond of the Chelsea Market, even though it's only marginally convenient for us. Perhaps the upscale "food mall" concept appeals to our suburban roots, or maybe its just the abundance of brownie samples at Fat Witch (not to mention their late day half price sale). At any rate, we are certainly not alone, as it has become something of a weekend attraction for some particularly slow walking slack-jawed tourists that you have to plow through to get to Sarabeth's Kitchen.
Typically the turnover rate is low in the former Nabisco factory, and once open, most of its shops stay put, so a new addition is unusual. A couple of  weeks ago, a void was filled in the retail assortment when Friedman's Delicatessen opened. The only Kosher shop in the complex, it offers sit-down dining from the people behind Pastrami Queen on Lexington Avenue. So far as we can tell, the response has been good, which is a feat in New York's contentious deli community. We are looking forward to sampling the pastrami, some gefilte fish and maybe a little matzoh ball soup. Our arteries are in somewhat less of a hurry.
