The Endless Liquidation: Picking Through The Dregs

Are they still liquidating?
Is there anything left?
Besides store fixtures, not much. We stopped into a few dying Circuit City locations on our travels over the past few days, just for the morbid fascination of seeing people rummaging through the selection of dodgy looking floor models. And yet the sale goes on.
Despite the blaring posters, not everything is actually at 70% off, even though there are only four days left in the sale. For whatever reason, there still seems to be a selection of computer printers, random cases for various electronic items, and, at least at the Union Square location, a bewildering abundance of Hancock DVDs.
As for electronics still in their boxes, there were a number of huge sized Mitsubishi flat panel TVs scattered about, but otherwise the stores are a slovenly maze of closed off sections and nearly empty shelves.
And yet, it's still not too depressing to buy something. After all, $6.60 seemed like a decent price for a Dark Knight DVD.
What will be depressing in a few months is the south side of Union Square. With the last Virgin Megastore in Manhattan officially closing in late May or early June, there will be a gaping chunk of empty retail space on 14th street. Hopefully there will be someone to lease it before too long.
Anyone?
