Napapijri Packs Up

Napapijriclosed
While retailers in general seemed to have a satisfactory Holiday Season, not everyone fared so well.
The Italian sportswear brand Napapijri quietly closed up shop after Christmas with a terse "Closed, Thank You" sign in the window after about three and a half years.
Perhaps it was the difficult to pronounce Finnish name, the no-longer-so-appealing travel and exploration theme or maybe just too many dated looking patches and logos on the rather expensive goods (we vote for the last one).
When the store opened, we guessed that its massive parent company, VF Corp., would be looking to roll out a series of Napapijri boutiques, but so far the only other U.S. location listed on the label's website is one on Lincoln Road in Miami. We have no word yet on how that one survived the Holidays.
The brand is leaving a healthy-sized shop on a particularly desirable block of Mercer Street (Marc Jacobs, Costume National, Vera Wang, Marni etc.). How long that newly available space remains empty should say a great deal about the current state of Manhattan retail.
