West Broadway is an peculiar street for retail. While it should be the main artery for shopping in SoHo, most of the major chains head for Broadway, and the exclusive luxury boutiques cluster themselves on the side streets. That leaves an eclectic mix of independent shops (some dodgy, some less so), a few remaining galleries, a few straying designers and miscellaneous others, including a series of tiny retail spaces, stalls really, where some stores come and go, often with little notice.
Last week, one of those micro-locations got a tenant perfectly suited to the compact space. Happy Socks, the Sweden based purveyor of brightly colored and patterned hosiery for the whole family, opened it's first New York concept store. There's not much room to sell clothes or handbags, but there's enough space to fill the walls with kaleidescopically decorated socks, each displayed in two sizes, presumably for men and women or grown-ups and kids. It is possibly the smartest use of extremely limited space on the block. Of course, there's only so much space for actual customers, especially with three in staff in the store at the same time. It's not unusual for a visitor like The Shophound to feel as if we have wandered into someone else's conversation.

Still, if you are a fan of directing attention to your ankles, Happy Socks will be a must-visit, but we have one more caveat. A wise fashion sage once warned us that one should never wear a tie or socks that are funnier or more interesting than oneself.
Can you pass that test?
