OVERSEAS IMPORTS:

UK Fast Fashion Brand Boohoo Set For Lower Fifth Avenue Debut

Boohoo
Yet another fast-fashion chain from a faraway land is set to make its New York debut. UK based internet retailer Boohoo.com, has reportedly signed a lease for a 2,000 square foot store at 3 West 13th Street just off Fifth Avenue and a block away from Union Square. The 10-year-old site has become one of the fastest growing online retailers worldwide. Aimed at 16 to 24 year-old customers, it looks to be poised to take on chains like Forever 21 with trendy but wallet-friendly looks for high school and college-aged shoppers. Though not an enormous store, it is being designed to be "experiential" space that will also serve as an event space and presumably encourage shoppers to shop on their phones and mobile devices while they are there.

Sale Season Heats Up With Oscar de la Renta, The Row, Rebecca Minkoff & More

True to form, the Sample Sale season is ramping up, and the heavy hitter sales will be coming fast and furious for the next couple of months.
Already under way this week are REBECCA MINKOFF, a popular favorite currently ensconced through the weekend at 260 Fifth Avenue, PRABAL GURUNG with a four-day blowout in the Garment District and OSCAR de la RENTA which has returned to Wooster Street in SoHo through the weekend offering designer Peter Copping's final seasons for the label at what has been reported to be some excellent prices.

Starting today the 26th, 260 Sample Sale will install status accessory brand MCM into its Greene Street location through Sunday offering up to 80% Off its collections for men and women while VIVIENNE TAM will be launching a three day sale in the Garment District.

On Thursday the 27th, the Olsen sisters' low-key luxury label THE ROW will kick off a three-day sale at Metropolitan Pavilion that should have its loyal customers lining up. Bespoke-minded gentleman will head to SoHo where PROPER CLOTH will be offering deep discounts on Tailored clothing and furnishings including a reported selection of shirts priced to move at $25.

Finally, of Friday the 28th, cashmere specialist JENNIFER TYLER will be making her seasonal stop at the Surrey Hotel on the Upper East Side with her English and Italian knitted apparel and accessories on sale through Monday.

Be sure to check our SALE ROLL sidebar for locations, times and other details.

WELCOME REAPPEARANCE:

Pearl River Mart To Return Next Month In Tribeca

PearlRiverMart
New York shoppers were disappointed to say the least last year when Pearl River Mart, the beloved Asian emporium in SoHo, was forced out of its Broadway home by a fivefold rent increase. The company has switched to an online business model since then, but the void it left has been glaring. There's good news for hopeful fans of the store, however. Pearl River Mart is set to return with an 8,000 square foot pop-up store on November 17th at 395 Broadway in Tribeca. In February, the pou-up will close for a build-out to become a permanent store. It will not be a replica of its 30,000 square foot SoHo predecessor (pictured above), however. Due to the smaller space, the store will forgo some of its more arcane departments such as traditional Chinese medicine and musical instruments. Some of the outsized decor items such as giant buddha figures will also be gone from the assortments, but popular departments like apparel and home and kitchen goods should be represented in abundance. According to Joanne Kwong, the new president of Pearl River, the new store will dedicate space to presenting Asian and Asian-American culture with a rotating assortment of products from designers and artists meant to educate shoppers of Asian traditions with special events and demonstrations.
The new store is still relatively close to Pearl River's SoHo and Chinatown roots, and hopefully, longtime fans will have not trouble finding it once it reopens.

CHAIN GANG:

Pottery Barn To Make A Big Bow In Flatiron

11W19th-PotteryBarn
Once a pervasive presence in Manhattan, the Pottery Barn chain has lost some prominent stores over the years in the city, and is now down to two locations in the city while its sibling chains, Williams-Sonoma and West Elm have held their own or grown stronger. That's about to change, as the company has inked a deal to open a major store at 11 West 19th Street in the heart of the Flatiron District as reported by multiple sources. The 20,000 square foot space is currently occupied by Lillian August (pictured above) which has been looking to get out of its lease there, and will surrender the space to make way for the deal. Like the West Elm in Chelsea that sits between Sixth and Seventh Avenues and opens out to both 17th and 18th streets, the new Pottery Barn will have entrances on both 19th and 20th streets. While missing the desirable Fifth Avenue frontage of other chains in the neighborhood, the new store will be right across the street from Muji as well as bakery hotspot Dough. It is in the middle of a home furnishings enclave popular with downtowners, and should still be a potent destination for shoppers. It's still too early to expect a firm opening date, but sometime next year should be a safe bet. In the meantime, shoppers can now check out West Elm's new luxury "Collection" store that has recently opened at 123 West 17th Street right next to its main label mothership.

Hermès, A.P.C., Vivienne Westwood & Another James Perse Redux Lead A Packed Sale Week

It's an unseasonably warm mid-October, which is just about the time that tha Fall Sample Sale Season kicks things up a few notches. Designers are starting to ship Holiday/Pre-Spring, and it's time to start shedding overstock and old samples, so every sale venue booked.

Earlier this week, JAMES PERSE kicked off another of his ever more frequent sample sales and ELIE TAHARI opened his midtown showroom for a seasonal blowout, both running through Saturday the 22nd.

Today, BONPOINT returns to the Metropolitan Pavilion with discounts on its collections of luxury apparel for precious little ones and babies for two days only. For those looking for French clothes for grown-ups, A.P.C. has set up an overstock sale through Sunday the 23rd at its overstock location in Williamsburg, so get there early if you want to snag the best items. The more athletically minded will be heading to SoHo for SOUL CYCLE's Warehouse sale featuring performance workout gear whether you are toiling on a stationery bike or elsewhere.

KIMORA LEE SIMMONS made her name on the runways and then as the designer for flashy Baby Phat, but her current signature collection is much more grown-up and sophisticated, which you will see at her two-day sample sale launching on Thursday the 20th in NoMad. Avant Garde Icon VIVIENNE WESTWOOD's four-day seasonal blowout also begins on Thursday in Midtown. Look for all of the designer's newly streamlined product lines for men and women through the weekend.

On Friday the 21st, sporty gentlemen will be heading to SoHo for the seasonal GILDED AGE sale running through next Tuesday. Those who have planned ahead and bought tickets will be heading to Chelsea's Altman building where the GILT CITY
Warehouse Sale
is making a more convenient return after its Sunset Park outing a few weeks ago in Brooklyn. Check for available spots left in this timed entry event.

Finally, a word about the week's big heavy hitter.
The now infamous HERMÈS sale returns to Soiffer Haskin's West Midtown location for the first time since it caused lines of shoppers to line up around several city blocks without even getting a chance to get inside at all. We don't know if Soiffer Haskin has devised a new protocol to make sure that potential shoppers don't waste their days hoping to be let inside, but we might warn eager Hermès shoppers to proceed with caution when it comes to this enticing event. This is the time when one must decide whether it is worth it to spend a day waiting on a sidewalk to buy some discounted luxury merchandise that will, in all likelihood, still be really, really expensive. It's worth noting that, as always, the brand's iconic items, Birkins, Kelly's etc., are never included at this sale. Shop at your own risk through Sunday.

Next week, things heat up further with The Row, Oscar de la Renta and more. Keep an eye on our SALE ROLL sidebar at left for all details and late breaking events.
