Along with the extensions of last week's FIVESTORY and AMERICAN GIANT sales, some last minute additions have livened up this week's sale roster including a critics darling or two. Here are some highlights:

HELMUT LANG and THEORY are making one more big appearance this season at Clothingline in the Garment District through Friday. This time around, the sibling labels are promising their biggest discounts to dade including original samples and, caveat emptor, slightly irregular inventory.

Starting today and running through Sunday, up and coming men's sportswear label CADET is holding a blowout sale on the eve of Men's Fashion Week in its Williamsburg boutique. Deep discounts are promised on overstock along with unique, inspirational samples, previous season stock and special extras like runway shoes which can often be rare bargains for men of larger feet.

Esoteric ready to wear, evening and bridal brand MORGANE LE FAY will be offering savings starting at 70% off on Broome Street in SoHo for a solid week through next Wednesday. Look for sophisticated, architectural designs with clever details in sumptuous fabrics.

Starting on Thursday the 26th, find discounts of 50% to 75% off at TASCHEN's Warehouse Sale in its Greene Street store. Look for lavish art books and pop culture volumes in various conditions from mint to gently handled. Shop through Sunday.

Also on Thursday, avant-garde streetwear sensation HOOD BY AIR will be holding a "Wearhouse" sale on the Lower East Side for its collections from the past five years. Daily replenishments will each highlight one year over the course of five-day sale. Look for items ranging from trendy sweatshirts to elaborate showpieces through Monday the 30th.

Finally, Saturday brings Swiss watchmaker and jeweler De GRISOGONO Soiffer-Haskin near Penn Station. The sale promises up to 70% off precious baubles and watches protected by the venue's typically restrictive entry policies, so leave your big bags, strollers and any kids under 12 at home. Shop through Monday the 30th.

THE PENDULUM SWINGS: Does Hermès Herald A Luxury Revival In The Meatpacking District?

The Meatpacking District may be entering its fourth phase (or fifth —who can keep track anymore?) as the most exclusive of luxury brands, Hermès, has announced its fourth New York City boutique will open at 46-48 Gansevoort Street (pictured above). The three level 10,000 square foot boutique will be only a short stroll away from the recently relocated Whitney Museum which may be beginning to live up to the expectations that it would revive the neighborhood as a destination for major shopping. While a decade ago, the neighborhood boasted Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Moschino boutiques, much of the neighborhood's luxury gloss faded when those stores moved either to SoHo or Madison Avenue. Last year's shuttering of upper contemporary chain Scoop NYC also drained some of the area's fashion juice as retail spaces gave way to less exclusive names like Levi's, Patagonia and UGG. Still, tony pioneer Jeffrey remains in place as other retailers have come and gone, and Diane Von Furstenberg is not likely to go anywhere anytime soon, so the neighborhood has not been given over completely to mall stores. It has become something of a destination, however for non-retail "brand experience" spaces like the Samsung 837 tech showplace and the upcoming "Intersect" from Lexus which will include a gallery and restaurant under the nameplate of an automaker. Well, at least it is a luxury automaker, which points to a renewed upscale direction for the areas with Hermès being the first full-on luxury player to enter the neighborhood since the relocation of the Whitney. Other upcoming arrivals will include the return of the sorely-missed Pastis restaurant which will be conveniently down the block in the former Gansevoort Market space. Area merchants are also looking to the eventual opening of the Restoration Hardware RH Gallery mega-store on Ninth Avenue to give the area a boost of retail excitement.
As for Hermès, the upcoming store is promised to be more casual than the Madison Avenue flagship and Wall Street units, and certainly larger than the Brookfield Place store which is mostly limited to fragrance and scarves. Plans include a rooftop terrace to attract both current and new customers, and impart a "downtown" ambiance to the store. Now we have to wait and see if the other luxury players who have sniffed around the Meatpacking District on and off over the past 15 years will follow Hermès and take the plunge themselves.

SAMPLE CIRCUIT: Fivestory's Blowout, TIBI's Rare Walk-In Sale, Sweats & Hoodies On 5th Ave & More

It's a pleasantly busy sale week again as winter settles in and designers are shedding the last of their samples and overstock with a few special events for good measure.

The first bonus sale comes from TIBI, whose SoHo shop is undergoing a renovation this season. While the brand has moved its seasonal sample sales online for a few years now, it will be holding a special in-person 'Demolition' sale at its temporary shop on Wooster Street featuring past season stock and samples. Fans of the label should appreciate the rare walk-in sale opportunity through Monday.

The week's biggest event may be seasonal FIVESTORY clearance sale that, this season, can be found on Greene Street in SoHo starting today, Tuesday the 17th. The uptown boutique has typically brought its final sale downtown in recent seasons, and this season should be no different. The menswear selection is gone now, but shoppers should still look for a cavalcade of women's runway star designer labels along with a generally excellent selection of shoes and accessories. Shop through Sunday.

On the other end of the spectrum, activewear brand AMERICAN GIANT is setting up shop at 260 Fifth Avenue through Sunday featuring good old fashioned, American-made sweats and hoodies —a perfect opportunity to stock up on cozy winter duds or classic workout gear for the retro-minded.

On Wednesday the 18th, VIVIENNE TAM will be staging one of her periodic sales at her Garment District showroom featuring  vintage samples as well as stock, and back in Soho, indie designers TESS GIBERSON, M.PATMOS and DARYL K are joining forces for a group sale on Crosby Street through Saturday promising up to 80% off their collections.

Finally, on Friday fur specialist DENNIS BASSO returns to Soiffer-Haskin for five days for his annual clearance including not only his legendary fur coats but also ready-to-wear, Children's wear and home collections.

GOING SOON: American Apparel Leads The Latest List Of Retail Implosions

We have been hearing about American Apparel's woes for so long that it is almost a surprise that it took the once innovative chain this long to finally shut down, which it is the process of doing right now.
We have certainly spent plenty of time going on about American Apparel various antics over the years, most recent it has been about the removal of its controversial founder and former CEO Dov Charney whose removal in 2014 shined a light on the company's worst attributes behind the scenes including not only his highly questionable work behavior and the environment it created, but, more importantly, his mismanagement of the retail chain which had grown larger than he was able successfully steward. It was an ugly fight and —long and complicated story short— he lost. New, more experienced management arrived, but the damage was more than they were able to repair, and after AA's most recent bankruptcy last year, the company's intellectual property and some of its equipment was sold for a mere $88 million to the Canadian company Gildan Activewear which was not interested in continuing to operate the chain of retail stores that in more optimistic days threatened to overrun New York City. While many American Apparel stores have already been closed through ongoing reorganization efforts, the rest will be gone in a few months. More upsettingly, Charney's pride and joy, his Los Angeles factory at which much of the company's products were made has been shut down. Workers spent Monday this week in lines at the facility to pick up their final paychecks. Monday's layoffs came to about 2,400 workers.  No severance and likely more layoffs to come.
American Apparel joins a group of retailers who have seen a sad New Year including the final shutdown of the once dominant women's apparel chain The Limited and the announcement of major store closures from iconic American chains Sears and Macy's. Each of these companies have long been suffering from their own systemic problems, so it may be premature to announce a crisis for the retail industry in general, but the loss of 100 Macy's units alone is going to be a jolt to retail landlords who now have to either redevelop the spaces or attract a shrinking pool of large stores to try and fill all those square feet —not to mention finding new tenants for the newly or soon-to-be empty Limited and American Apparel spaces that dot shopping areas across the country.

We're enjoying a nice post-Holiday lull in the sample sale schedule right now, but the good news is that if you missed last weeks offerings, they are still around.
260SampleSale's SCOTCH & SODA and THE ARRIVALS + FAITH CONNEXION sales have been given another week to lure in shoppers. The Arrivals & Faith Connexion are right where you found them in SoHo, but Scotch & Soda will be moving to the organization's alternate space on Wooster street as noted in our SALE ROLL sidebar at left.

New Offerings include a RACHEL ZOE blowout sale at Clothingline in the Garment District on Tuesday and Wednesday that is promising savings uf up to 95% off and will also include some other contemporary brands as well.

Also starting on Tuesday the 10th, Men's trouser specialists BONOBOS will take over 260 Fifth Avenue through Sunday the 15th. Look for not only the famous pants, but the burgeoning brand's complete sportswear and tailored clothing collections.

There's not too much else going on this week, and the month in general is expected to be fairly light on the sales, but nest week, luxury shoppers should keep an eye out for FIVESTORY's seasonal warehouse sale along with upcoming sales from Vivienne Tam, Theory, Helmut Lang & more.

ONLINE TO REAL-LIFE: Amazon's Brick & Mortar Bookstore Is Coming To Columbus Circle

Later this year, that 4,000 square foot space on the third floor will be transformed into New York City's first permanent Amazon Bookstore. While you would probably need the entirety of Time Warner Center's retail space to display a full array of what Amazon offers online, the bookstore is expected to primarily serve to showcase the company's proprietary products like Kindle and Alexa, along with a curated selection of books. It will be more the size of the B.Dalton or Waldenbooks chain stores that some us remember, than the sprawling Borders that once existed only a few steps away. Whether or not Amazon aims to eventually repopulate some of the newly available retail space in malls all over the country remains to be seen, but the upcoming branch won't be the only one coming to the area. Amazon is also officially coming to Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey. The two stores will be the seventh and eighth Amazon Bookstores that have been announced which makes the brick and mortar chain still a tiny offshoot of the online giant which currently has three stores open in San Diego, California, Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon. Now the question to be answered will be whether New Yorkers, who have become extremely comfortable ordering fast deliveries from Amazon wherever they might be themselves, will be interested in visiting an actual Amazon store.
